Swedish Asshole premiered at Teater Viirus in Helsinki on 4 March at Teater Viirus in Helsinki and will be playing until 24 March. The performing arts piece delves into themes of whiteness, the need for belonging and delusions about immunity in the community of Swedish speaking Finns.

The piece explores how the context of Swedish speaking Finland is transformed into a liminal space in between worlds: for example east and west, Finnish and Swedish.

“Some central questions in the process concern how provocative actions on stage and provocative content are interpreted depending on who is on stage – in other words, how different bodies are assigned different meanings on stage. Norms of whiteness and social status within a Finland-Swedish (and Nordic) context are key starting points. We hope this will spark discussion about whiteness and privilege within Finland-Swedish circles, within the arts field, and in society more broadly”, the working group behind Swedish Asshole says.

Actor Antonia Atarah, sound designer Nicolas “Leissi” Rehn, dancers Johanna Karlberg and Alen Nsambu, worked on the piece while in residence at Davvi – Senter for scenekunst in Hammerfest in September 2025. The residency opportunity was made possible through a collaboration between Davvi – Centre for Performing Arts, the Swedish Cultural Foundation, and the Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute.
